I couldn’t remember ever being as mad as I was when I found out that Jasmine had gone out to dinner with Nicco. I should have left right then and there, but I couldn’t. I needed to sort out my thoughts.

When she’d walked into the bedroom wearing that thong and bra, I’d had to act like I wasn’t interested. I wanted her bad, but I’d had to do it my way. I had let her fall asleep mad. My anger wouldn’t let me sleep, though, so I’d lain awake, watching her. I loved this woman, but I couldn’t have this kind of drama in my life. I had to be strong and let her go. I knew I was getting too attached to her, and this incident gave me the excuse I needed to break away. I didn’t want to be tied down, and she obviously didn’t want to be, either.

After I broke up with Jasmine for good, I headed to the Sheraton, where I emptied the minibar and passed out for the night.

When I got home, I threw myself into my work. I had thought I would break up with her and that would be it. Yet I was thinking about her more now than I had before we’d broken up. I needed to get out of the house, so I headed to the studio downtown. I loved the bustling atmosphere, and being in the studio usually kept me focused on my work.

I was in the engineering booth when Ray walked into the studio with four women. He was holding a cup of something, and right then I knew our day would be unproductive. Ray was one of those people who shouldn’t drink. I believe he was allergic to alcohol. He got stupid and then into trouble.

Jimmy groaned at the sight of Ray and his entourage. “Look at this shit, Sean. We won’t get any work done.”

Ray asked, “Are you talking about me, Jimmy?”

“All these women mean trouble. Oh, why waste my breath?”

He sat down and said, “Come on, Jimmy, that was two years ago. The charges were dropped.”

“The charges weren’t the problem, Ray. You interfered with the trust in my marriage. To this day, my wife doesn’t trust me. I can’t do shit without her thinking I’m at a strip club or some shit, thanks to you.”

Ray didn’t seem to mind, but he said, “I’m sorry about that, man. Let’s try to move past this. We were once really tight. Seriously, though, Jimmy, I’m truly sorry for getting you in trouble like that.”

“Yeah, all right, Ray.”

Ray sat in a rolling chair, opened his arms, and said, “So, we’re all good?”

“Yeah, Ray, we’re good.”

Ray was in a talkative mood, loosened up by the liquor. “So, Jimmy, tell me what’s up with this chick Jasmine? I think Sean is gonna be settled down soon.”

I said with a dangerous undertone, “Don’t go there, Ray. Me and Jasmine are just friends.” I was hoping that Jimmy wouldn’t jump on the bandwagon, but that was wishful thinking.
